DCC narrowly misses Major Upset

HOUSTON – Coach Williams prepared the DCCMBB Crusaders for the charge into the ‘Den’ of the HBU Huskies and almost pulled off a major upset Saturday night before falling by the score of 82-73.

Chad Herring went 7-of-9 from the field and 9-of-12 from the free-throw line to lead Dallas Christian (1-7) with 23 points and seven rebounds. Malcolm McCarty went 13-of-13 from the free-throw line and had 17 points and four rebounds for the Crusaders. Max Berman had 14 points, making two three-pointers and all four of his free throws.

HBU shot 51 percent from the field for the game,  while Dallas Christian shot 38 percent from the field. The Crusaders stayed in the game at the charity stripe, making 29-of-34, compared to 21-of-30 for the Huskies.

After HBU took its largest lead of the half at 30-20 with 5:29 to go, Dallas Christian outscored the Huskies, 9-1, to get back to within two. Russell scored back-to-back baskets to restore HBU’s advantage to six, but the Huskies only took a 39-37 lead into halftime as McCarty hit six free throws down the stretch for the Crusaders.

McCarty’s three-point play with 11:45 remaining cut the Crusaders’ deficit to five. Herring and Will Mason scored back-to-back baskets for Dallas Christian to make HBU’s lead 65-62 with 8:20 left remaining, but Russell sank a pair of free throws and Harper got a layup to put the lead back to seven.

The Huskies went up 10 with 1:43 on the clock and went on to close out the game by a nine-point difference.

The Crusaders gain points in the ranking system by finishing within 10 pts to a NCAA division school.

The Crusaders return to the hardwood again this Monday night at home against Southwest Assembly of God University, a NAIA D1 school that they lost to by 14 earlier this season.  The Lions upset NCAA DII Tarleton State last week by 13 pts.  The Crusaders would love to see a full house as they attempt to defend their home court.
