Crusaders fall short in season opener

The Dallas Christian College Crusaders almost came away with the first season opening victory in school history.  Coach Charles H. Williams Crusaders started very slowly in the 1st half but came on strong in the second half, even taking the lead briefly.  This team is loaded with freshmen but played with a poise and balance beyond their years in the latter part of this contest before falling to the NAIA DII Moundbuilders, 81-77.

Shooting 21% from the field and falling behind by 19 in the 1st half, left them down  41-26.  This brought out the core values Coach Williams has spent all pre-season trying instill in his team.  There was an emphasis on the effort put forth by the players to start the 2nd half and the confidence to trust that their preparation was enough to pull out a victory.    The result was a 61-60 lead with a little more than 6 minutes remaining.

Returning starter, Malcolm McCarty, saddled with foul trouble, had 4 pts in the 1st half but dropped 19 in a second half offensive burst.  Aaron Espinosa had a strong floor game, handling pressure, applying tight defense and hitting clutch shots, as the Crusaders climbed out of the early pit they dug for themselves.  The team travels to Winfield, KS tomorrow to face Central Christian College.
