Frequently Asked Questions About ACCESS

  1. Can I enter the program before I graduate?
No, you must hold a bachelor’s degree to enter the program. A person who is scheduled to graduate in May may apply, and if they meet all admission requirements, may enter the program upon graduation, which must precede the date of the start of the ACCESS classes.

  2. Can’t I just go take the tests and get a job?
Perhaps you could take the tests and pass them, however, the
No Child Left Behind law requires schools to hire people who are “highly qualified” to teach. ACCESS will provide the skills necessary to be a successful teacher. Passing a test does not prepare you to teach.

  3. What is the difference in ACCESS and other alternative certification programs?
ACCESS classes prepare you to enter the classroom in the Fall with the skills and confidence you need to succeed as a teacher. You will also have specific curriculum units and plans for teaching ready to go. In addition, the ACCESS intern will not have classes to attend two-three times per week all year while they try to teach.

  4. In terms of appeal, what is the best certification for me to seek?
It depends on you and your passions and interests. You need to have a minimum of twenty-four college hours in a content area or a passing TExES Content Test score in a specific content area and level in order to teach that subject/ level. You won’t get a job otherwise. There are some areas of critical shortage, such as math, science, special education, bilingual education, etc. Again, it depends on you and your preparation to teach that content and level.

  5. Will you help me find a job?
ACCESS training includes techniques of interviewing and portfolio development in the courses. We will provide you with a list of job fairs in the Dallas area. We will contact local schools and districts to let them know of your preparation and certification areas. We will pray with and for you to get a job. We will let you know of job openings, as we become aware of them. The rest is up to you.

  6. What are the payment options for ACCESS?
ACCESS costs $4950. You can pay the full amount on/before July 1. You can apply for student loans, grants and scholarships to assist with the cost of tuition ($3950) and books on/before July 1. You can pay the cost in three installments, with the approval of the DCC business office. The first installment would be due on July 1. The non-refundable admission fee of $50 is due when admission packet is submitted. The training fee is due on/before June 1. An early registration discount of $250 is available if you register before March 31, 2008.

  7. When is the summer training?
Summer training starts June 10 (Tues) and ends August 1, 2008. The training is from 8:30-4:30 Tuesday through Friday. Attendance is mandatory.

  8. Are any training sessions held during internship?
